Detailed Itinerary
Mongena Private Concession (within Dinokeng Game Reserve)
Your birding adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your Johannesburg hotel. We then head north, leaving the city behind as we drive approximately two hours to Mongena Game Reserve, a prime spot for birdwatching near Johannesburg.
Upon arrival, the dawn chorus welcomes us to this stunning biome-transition zone. Initial sightings often include Lilac-breasted Roller, African Wattled Lapwing, Magpie Shrike, Black-winged Kite, Little Swift, and White-browed Scrub-Robin. We’ll transfer to our open safari vehicle, providing unobstructed views as we explore the clear Kalahari Thornveld. Expect to see species such as Southern Pied Babbler, Crimson-breasted Shrike, Burchell’s Starling, Barred Wren-Warbler, Kalahari Scrub-Robin, Shaft-tailed Whydah, Scaly-feathered Weaver, Ashy Tit, and Violet-eared Waxbill.
As the morning warms, we’ll transition to the reserve’s diverse wetland systems. Here, watch for Goliath Heron and Black Heron, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, Half-collared Kingfisher, Giant Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, African Jacana, White-backed Duck, African Swamphen, Black Crake, African Rail, and African Snipe.
Although this is a half-day tour, birding pauses briefly for a delicious brunch at Mongena’s Kingfisher Restaurant. Enjoy refreshments while spotting Southern-masked Weaver, Lesser-masked Weaver, and Village Weaver, Malachite Kingfisher, Yellow-billed Egret, Cardinal Woodpecker, Crested Barbet, Red-billed Buffalo-Weaver, Red-winged Starling, and the resident Black-chested Snake Eagle.
Following a rewarding morning of birding, we embark on the scenic drive back to Johannesburg, sharing highlights and memories from this exceptional birdwatching experience.
