Day Tour Details
The various nature reserves and wetland habitats around the Johannesburg region offer some of the best Bird Photography in South Africa, which is why our Marievale Bird Photography Day Tour is a must! With spots such as Marievale Bird Sanctuary on its doorstep, you can spend days in the field chasing birds of all kinds. However, if all you have is half a day and you’re looking to spend some time in multiple bird hides in a relatively small area, Marievale is the place for you. We’ll spend the morning targeting various wetland specials such as Blue-billed Teal, Black Crake, African Rail, African Swamphen, Pied-, Malachite- and Giant Kingfisher, African Marsh Harrier, Little Rush Warbler and more.
This half-day tour is best run in the early morning period of the day, however, due to the various hides all over the birding sanctuary, late afternoon photography sessions offer their own special flare to what’s available.
Marievale Bird Sanctuary:
Leaving early in the morning, we take a 1.5-hour drive to the well-known Marievale Bird Sanctuary, to kick off our Bird Photography Day Tour.
Throughout the various wetlands, reedbeds and bird hides, we’ll be searching for specials such as African Rail, African Snipe, Greater- and Lesser Flamingo, Goliath Heron, Fan-tailed Widowbird, Black Crake, African Reed Warbler, Blue-billed-, Red-billed- and Cape Teal, Little Bittern, Pied Avocet, Black-winged Stilt, Knob-billed Duck, Malachite Kingfisher, Brown-throated Martin and many more.
We’ll take our time exploring between the 6 bird hides, looking for Marsh Owl, African Marsh Harrier, Grey-headed Gull, Pied-, Malachite- and Giant Kingfisher, African Fish Eagle and more.
As the day heats up, we’ll slowly start making our way out of the sanctuary and take the 1.5-hour drive back to Johannesburg. Bird Photography Day Tour
